Horribly explained topic, terribly confusing coverage of a very cool but difficult subject

I'll start by saying that I graduated with Honors and on the Dean's List with a degree in Physics from a prestigious engineering school. So my hatred of this book is not because the subject matter is hard (which it is); rather, it's because Kittel does a phenomenally horrible job explaining it. It's a difficult subject, and it's a damn shame that this is the go-to textbook.
