The drama of Good Friday

Sean Walsh has written a thought-provoking and powerful play, indeed trio of plays, about the drama of Good Friday, taking his inspiration from the passion according to Matthew and, in particular, from the evangelist's portrayal of Pilate, his wife, Barabbas, the two insurectionists who were crucified with Jesus, the Roman centurion and Joseph of Arimathea. The result is an imaginative re-telling of the Passion story that allows us to hear it in a way that speaks to our times. The characters in this drama are real people; the dilemmas they stuggle with are authentic human dilemmas. All the time Jesus is off-stage, yet his absent presence is the catalyst for the many dramas within this dramatic text. Of all the characters, Pilate alone is a person of power. Yet, by the end of the play we are left wondering if the way he exercises power has robbed him of all authority. The contemporary resonances are palpable.

A wonderful read, it's so believable, as though the writer himself was there and part of it all, he takes us on a remarkable journey leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus. Would make a great screenplay.

At the Praetorium

We know the Good Friday story all too well - or do we?
In "At the Praetorium" Walsh views the trial and crucifixion of Christ
through another prism - the eyes and feelings of the "minor" characters
in the story, thieves, servants, soldiers, Pilate's wife. In doing so,
he moves US, the audience, centre-stage and challenges our
convictions.

It would take a highly-talented playwright to construct new drama
from the most dramatic day in world history. Such is Walsh's talent
that he has managed to chisel out in a simple but stark fashion a
whole new perspective on the Crucifixion story. Indeed, he is genuinely
asking, "Were you there when they crucified my Lord?"

Three fast-moving and sparely-written one-act plays [the third one a
fusion of the first two] capture the mood, tension and the challenge
of Good Friday in a wholly new and convincing fashion.

A former U.S. diplomat with service in Taiwan, South Vietnam, and Washington, D.C., he received his doctorate in Far Eastern history from Georgetown University in 1968, where his dissertation dealt with the Chinese educator and reformer Cai Yuanpei. At Penn State, he has written extensively on the history of Vietnam and modern China, including the highly acclaimed COMMUNIST ROAD TO POWER IN VIETNAM (revised edition, Westview Press, 1996), which was selected for a Choice Outstanding Academic Book Award in 1982--1983 and 1996-1997. Other recent books are CHINA AND VIETNAM: THE ROOTS OF CONFLICT (Berkeley, 1987), U.S. CONTAINMENT POLICY AND THE CONFLICT IN INDOCHINA (Stanford, 1995), SACRED WAR: NATIONALISM AND REVOLUTION IN A DIVIDED VIETNAM (McGraw-Hill, 1995), and HO CHI MINH (Hyperion, 2000), which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2001. While his research specialization is in the field of nationalism and Asian revolutions, his intellectual interests are considerably more diverse. He has traveled widely and has taught courses on the history of communism and non-Western civilizations at Penn State, where he was awarded a Faculty Scholar Medal for Outstanding Achievement in the spring of 1996. In 2002, the College of Liberal Arts honored him with an Emeritus Distinction Award.

Jackson J. Spielvogel is associate professor Emeritus of history at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, where he specialized in Reformation history under Harold J. Grimm. His articles and reviews have appeared in journals such as "Moreana," "Journal of General Education," "Catholic Historical Review," "Archiv für Reformationsgeschichte," and "American Historical Review." He also has contributed chapters or articles to "The Social History of Reformation," THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE: A DICTIONARY HANDBOOK, "Simon Wiesenthal Center Annual of Holocaust Studies," and "Utopian Studies." His work has been supported by fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation and the Foundation for Reformation Research. At Penn State, he helped inaugurate the Western civilization course, as well as a popular course on Nazi Germany. His book HITLER AND NAZI GERMANY was published in 1987 (Seventh Edition, 2013). He is the author of WESTERN CIVILIZATION, first published in 1991 (Ninth Edition, 2015). Professor Spielvogel has won five major university-wide teaching awards. During the year 1988--1989, he held the Penn State Teaching Fellowship, the university's most prestigious teaching award. In 1996, he won the Dean Arthur Ray Warnock Award for Outstanding Faculty member, and in 2000 received the Schreyer Honors College Excellence in Teaching Award.

About the Author
Soora Rasouli (Assistant Professor, Urban Planning Group, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands) has research interests in activity-based models of travel demand, uncertainty in complex systems, and methods of data collection. She is member of the editorial board of Journal of Urban Planning and Development, International of Transportation, Modern Traffic and Transportation Engineering Research, International Journal of Urban Science, and Journal of Traffic and Transportation Planning. She is junior career member of International Steering Committee for Travel Survey Conferences, and member of the Transportation Research Board Special Committee on Travel Forecasting Resources. Her work has been published in Environment and Planning A, Environment and Planning B, Networks and Spatial Economics, Transportation Research A, and the International Journal of Geographic Information Science. She has acted as guest editor for Environment and Planning B, Travel Behavior and Society, and Journal of Choice Modeling. She received several awards for her research.

Harry Timmermans holds a PhD degree in Geography/Urban and Regional Planning. He studied at the Catholic University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands. His dissertation concerned a theory of the functional and spatial structure and the dynamics of central place systems. Since 1976 he is affiliated with the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning of the Eindhoven University of Technology, The Nether�lands. First as an assistant professor of Quantitative and Urban Geography, later as an associate professor of Urban Planning Research. In 1986 he was appointed chaired professor of Urban Planning at the same institute. In 1992 he founded the European Institute of Retailing and Services Studies (EIRASS) in Eindhoven, the Netherlands (a sister institute of the Canadian Institute of Retailing and Services Studies). His main research interests concern the study of human judgement and choice processes, mathematical modelling of urban systems and spatial interaction and choice pattens and the development of decision support and expert systems for application in urban planning. He has published several books and many articles in journals in the fields of marketing, urban planning, architecture and urban design, geography, environmental psychology, transportation research, urban and regional economics, urban sociology, leisure sciences and computer science.

About the Author

Born in Pittston, the son of a Polish-American mine worker, Wirkus was destined for the life of a coal miner, but he ran away at 18 and joined the marines. In 1925, when a gunnery sergeant, he was appointed Marine administrator of La Gonave to halt internal disputes among the 12,000 natives on the small island. La Gonave had had a king named Faustin. When Faustin Wirkus arrived the natives knelt before him and buxom Queen Ti Meminne pronounced him the reincarnation of the late ruler, Wirkus became king and wore a two-foot crown. He was admitted to voodoo rituals and acquired a deeper knowledge of black magic than any other white man of his time. Wirkus gained wide publicity when the late William Seabrook, novelist, visited La Gonave and wrote a book "The Magic Isle." As a result, officials of Haiti, which claimed jurisdiction over the Island of La Gonave, found out about this and forced Wirkus to abdicate in 1929. He was discharged from the Marine Corps later the same year. Later he wrote this book with Taney Dudley, "The White King of La Gonave," lectured and became a bond broker in New York. In 1937, he married an Atlanta woman, who with their 7-year old son survived him. Wirkus returned to the Marine Corps in 1939 as a recruiting specialist and in 1944 was appointed instructor in aviation gunnery at the Chapel Hill, NC, Marine station. Taney Dudley was born in August 1901 in New Orleans. Little is known about her except that she lived in Bronxville New York and on April 6, 1929 she took a boat from Port-au-Prince Haiti to New York arriving on April 11, 1929. She was apparently the ghost writer and editor of this book but this is never explained.

This is a fascinating true story of a U.S. Marine who through a bizarre chain of events becomes the , "White King" of La Gonave which is an island just off the coast of Haiti. He must have been an intelligent and good hearted soul and he tells a good story. I read a borrowed version of this years ago and am excited to see it back in print...
