Excellent place to start

I am a professional developer who's worked on a wide variety of games (including some big titles like Zoo Tycoon 2 and Red Dead Redemption), and also teach classes in game programming and game AI. I use this book as a text for half of my Introduction to Game Programming class, and have my students (who are typically sophomores, many of whom have never built a game or even used C++ before) build a 2D game from scratch in C++ in about 5 weeks.

For somebody who has never built a game before and wants to learn about how they work, this book is an excellent place to start! It doesn't really get into 3D games at all (the last couple chapters hardly even scratch the surface), but it does teach the basic skills necessary to nearly all games out there. It also teaches the basics of working with DirectX and Windows.

I have two complaints with the book (from a teacher's perspective). First, while it is an excellent place to start, it doesn't cover the full breadth of material that I need to get through in an Intro to Game Programming book. With that said, it's much more practical and concrete than other books I've look at, which is why I still use it.

My second complaint is that the code - while functional and easy to take apart and play with - is very much sort of quick-and-dirty, C-style code. For the most part it's all just stuffed into the main() function with no classes at all, a lot of global variables, and poor variable/function names. This is fine for demonstrating the concepts, but I also need to teach my students how to write good code, code that can be expanded on and maintained over the course of a project that will last at least a couple years (and grow to be hundreds of thousands or millions of lines of code), and of course code that will get them past the technical interview at a game company. It would be nice if the book code stood out as an example of how to write really good, well-structured code, not as an example of what *not* to do when architecting your engine.

Beginning Game Programming Third Edition

Most of the reviews on this book are from the first and second editions which are from different writer and/or different language C. This review is of the Third Edition by Jonathan S. Harbour, for C++.

The book is really good, it starts into the basics of windows programming but only goes far enough so you know how to get a program running to start making directx games, which is good cause that stuff is confusing and not much fun. But the rest of the book is a blast to read and the information is priceless. As you go through the book you start building a library of your own for directx that you can use in all your projects and games even after the book is read, which gives it lasting value. The writing style is excellent and interesting, the example code just works everytime if you type it in correctly. Overall this book is perfect for me and perfect for anyone who understands C++ and wants to make games with directx.

A definate step for beginners to game development

I have been teaching myself game development through the years This review is going to be lengthy but well worth the read.

This book delivers its promise of being for beginner programmers. It will be by the end of the 5th chapter, you will have DirectX set up for a framework and actually make a game. It is well written with a few author quirks but by the end you will know how to set up what you need for your game.

I would have bought this book sooner, but I was arrogant and getting myself confused in the DirectX vs OpenGL debate way before it would even matter, before I knew how to program a game. Don't cloud yourself with that argument when learning. It cost me a year before another programmer slapped me. If you use windows, beginning with DirectX is a no brainer because it has all you need in a tool set, which makes it easier to learn. You can always learn other libraries, but first you have to learn to make a game.

But do not buy this book thinking it is for a pure beginner. It is for a beginner PROGRAMMER. You need to know the language before you pick this book up. If you do not understand references or pointers (or accept pointers for what they are) I would say learn more C++ before you continue. If I could send my past self books, My list would have went like this:

Beginning C++ Game Programming (You need to know a language. C++ isn't the best to start with, but I did anyways. NO REGRETS)
C++ Primer (This is useful no matter what level your expertise of C++)
Beginning Game Programming (This book)
Code Complete (With bigger programs, you NEED to know programming etiquette. It saves you time and effort.)
Programming Roleplaying Games /w Direct X (This will let you make a game engine with some bells and whistles. It will really teach you file input/output with lists and such, and expand your knowledge about menu screens and dabble in making tools)

After those books, I would say you should try to make your own game or find a book on the genre you would like to specialize in.

Terrible book unless you're only interested in North American regions

This book is horrible, I used it as a source for one of my geology presentations and all the information I got from it concerning the Arabian plate was wrong. Several of my classmates used it too because they, like I, thought we had found the perfect book. The professor came up to us individually and let us know we all had severely wrong statements in our presentations. I suggest that if you buy this book, you should cross check EVERYTHING with multiple sources. Which kind of defeats the purpose of buying the book in the first place.

great great book

This is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in geomorphology. A great overview of mega-landforms around the world, what used to be characterized as "physiography"; geomorphology at a coarse, broad scale. Where are the mountains ranges, plateaus, and plains regions of the world? This book answers those questions, providing explanations for these broad patterns across the globe (plate tectonics, etc). Great great book. Great!

It's hard to know whether to laugh or cry at this forthright, kindly and odd saga of advice from one of the most public divorcees in recent memory. Ivana obviously wants to help women struggling with some semblance of her own troubles. Get tough, get on with your life, keep busy, look good, find a new man: not much to argue with there. But however hard she tries to identify with ordinary folk, she can't resist telling how Prince Charles dropped by for tea at Mar-a-Lago. Seemingly nothing escapes Ivana's sharp eye. Her readers are bombarded with rhetorical questions: "You're not surprised are you?" (that Diana couldn't change Charles); "That's quite a blessing, don't you think?" (the two young princes). Cinderella wins no points from Ivana: "Cinderella should have said good-bye to those nasty relatives, cleaned herself up, gotten a nice job and a cute apartment somewhere." It is easy to mock, but the heart of the champion skier from the former Czechoslovakia is in the right place. She adores her three children and manages to keep all animosity toward The Donald out of these pages, saying, "I wish Donald nothing but the best, and I know he feels the same way toward me." This curiosity rather than self-help volume will be read more for the interesting detail of daily life as Ivana Trump than for hints on how to survive divorce and single parenthood.

I have never said this before about any book, but this one is a life changer for me!

I have been suicidally depressed since I was five years old. I have spent 40 years in therapy and I am on a cocktail of meds. I have had ECT treatments with varying success. I was ready to give up on therapy and possible get a cigulatomy. Then I found this book. It all seems familiar. There is nothing radical in it, but seeing things presented as lifetraps (schemas) allowed me to see myself in a new way. I recognized myself in the subjugation lifetrap. As difficult as it was I started to assert myself, to ask for help and be honest with myself about my own passive-aggressiveness and my depression started lifting! As soon as I was manipulated into doing something I didn't want to do, I could feel the depression returning. I later told that person I would not be able to help after all and the depression lifted. It was the classic case depression being anger turned inwards. Its just that I turn it inward so fast that I never knew that it was anger. I am looking forward to finding myself in some of the other lifetraps.

An Outstanding Self-help Resource

This is brilliant work. It is easy to read, there are interesting examples of all nine schema (the filters you see your life through) and the "how to" chapter offers the diligent a way to work through behaviors that no longer serve you. The reader must make the commitment to complete the exercises and be willing to get assistance when the going gets tough, but the tools are here to help you understand and accept yourself and make healthy choices.

I have shared the book with numerous friends and family members. The feedback has been positive and what people tell me again and again is that the book gave them hope...hope of conquering behaviors that interfered with relationships, career advancement, handling money prudently. It is very powerful, so if you want to feel better about yourself and you've been wondering how to make that happen, give this book a try. I am confident you will feel you got your money's worth.

This is a great book! They manage to put enough things in here to encourage and challenge you and yet not too much -- they wont scare you away. It dose get almost too detailed from time to time but for the most part they really have a book here that anyone new or experienced in the field can enjoy. I love it and would love to get this out to my friends and neighbors.

Nice examples of successful Green Roofs

This book is great for those who may have trouble visualizing the possibilities of what you can do with a green roof. There are many examples of what you can grow, and what types of vegetation are suitable. The book is however not very technical about the architectural detailing considerations involved. Some sections and detail drawings would make this book much more valuable as a design resource.

Nice introduction but lacks depth

While this book covers a lot of ground, it never digs in very deeply. How about some specifics on green roof components or support systems for living walls? This book doesn't provide those kinds of details. Although it has directories of plants for roofs and walls, the descriptions are very sketchy and, for most of the species, it doesn't provide hardiness zones. You'll have to be familiar with them or do additional research just to determine if they'll survive in your climate. For green roof plants, take a look at the Snodgrass book on green roof plants instead. Planting Green Roofs and Living Walls is a good introduction but you'll need to look at other books that provide more detailed case studies.
