Not enough "EVIL" in it for my genius!

I like the book in general. Like almost all of the books of this series, there simply isn't enough "EVIL" in it for my genius. Why don't these things have computer controlled water squirt guns or a favorite project from an old electronics magazine was a circuit that made a randomly generated noise at random intervals. I put that thing in the air vent of my roommates bedroom and he search for it for days before coming to me and saying "What have you done?" Hee hee. Priceless.

Anyway, that being said, the book carries you through quite a range of projects. It does a good job of discussing what you are doing and why. It is definitely for the more novice of us, as it starts with opening the box of the BeagleBone Black (BBB) and powering it up. But, that is fine. We all have to start somewhere. Why not start with a sound moral guidance like "Evil Genius".

A minor issue I have is that the book builds upon itself. What I mean by this is that as the projects go along, they rely on you having done the projects before. The project will say you need to install "X" software and perform "Y" task, but that task may have a dependency on the requirement tasks from projects before. For instance, you can't just jump in and do Project 18 without having setup your python environment in Project 15. Minor, but a bit of a pain.

I've also found a couple of typos that actually matter, but I have not found (with Google search and reading the book) a forum in which to report them. (ex. Page 64, Project 15 - He has you run "Opkg update && opkg install python-pip python-setuptools python smbus". There are two mistakes with this. One: I'm sure his word processor capitalized the first word of the paragraph, but UNIX is case sensitive. "Opkg" and "opkg" are not the same and it will not run. Two: He is missing a hyphen. The package name is "python-smbus", not two separate packages "python" and "smbus".

These are not major mistakes, so I only took one star (I don't know, they may be major if you don't know shell, but I do and I caught them right away. As this book assumes you are a beginner, this might be a bigger issue for most.) I wish that when you bought a hard copy of a book you automatically got the ebook version because that way you would always have a copy that was up to date when they made corrections. Further more, every tech book author should include a way to contact them. There are just too many reasons why.

Overall it is a very enjoyable look into the BBB and the projects are fun and useful. It's worth the price. Enjoy.

UPDATE: One more note, the book says you can download all of the code from github, but the site doesn't have the files. There is only a README.md file. I hope the author gets those files there soon. I don't like typing enough to type all of these projects in manually.

Excellent Beaglebone Project Book

If you are looking for inspiration as to what to do with your BeagleBone Black, then this is the book for you. The projects are thoroughly described in a step-by-step manner and the Appendix includes part codes for CPC, MCM, Sparkfun and Adafruit. All the source code for the projects is available on Github, making it easy to download it directly onto the BBB.

As well as the usual doing things with LEDs, including matrix displays, the projects also include more exciting things like: a GPS tracker, a robot rover, a foam dart gun sentinel, as well as various security type projects for the would-be Evil Genius to use to protect their lair.

As with all project books, its not just about the projects themselves. along the way, you will learn a lot about connecting electronics to a BBB and how to go about programming this great device.

I have to declare an interest here in that I introduced Chris to the TAB team. But I am very glad I did. This is an excellent book and I look forward to seeing more books from Chris.

Shouldn't an evil genius be more ambitious?

What struck me as I leafed through this book for the first few times is that there's very little about this book that actually needs a BeagleBone Black. This is a fine book for a beginner, and might be good inspiration for a more advanced developer, but the BBB provides a lot of flexibility that the author doesn't even come close to using. (Considering how popular it is and how badly bottlenecked production was for the first half of 2014 until Element14 started making them, this is a particularly frustrating outcome.)

There isn't a lot in here that lends itself to evil, honestly, but I guess it depends on how creative you can be with a lie detector (as best as I can tell, a variant on the circuit used in Scientology's e-meter, so...?) or a spy cam. (Notable exception: the sentinel turret, which couples the BBB to an off-the-shelf USB dart launcher. That's a recipe for epic chaos of the "ow stop that" variety.) there probably could be a bit more Python code in here, since that seems to be the lingua franca for this sort of development, but Javascript is the BBB's native language and therefore the path of least resistance. Rush doesn't place as much of an emphasis on product engineering as others in the series have done, so some of these might be more brittle than you'd expect in operation. I do like the wiring diagrams, most of which were done in Fritzing and bear that program's watermark; they're as clear and unambiguous as it's possible to be, which IMHO more than makes up for the lack of color.

As I said though, the book doesn't really take advantage of the BBB's unique features. The realtime processing cores go completely unmentioned when they'd be especially useful for processing sensor data, and no project seems to use more than about a dozen of the board's vast array of GPIO connections; in fact, most of this if not all of it could be done just as easily with a Raspberry Pi. While it's a good book to get for the BBB novice, it seems better books have yet to be written.

Preface

This is an exciting time to work in biotechnology. The Human Genome Project is generating fundamental genetic information at a breathtaking rate; basic research findings are being applied in medicine, agriculture, and the environment; and a variety of new biotechnology products are moving into production. Behind each of these accomplishments are teams of scientists and technicians whose everyday work makes such achievements possible.

For the past twelve years, we have been working with students who are beginning their careers as technicians and bench scientists in biotechnology laboratories. In order to best assist our students, we, and our colleagues elsewhere in the United States, have explored what entry level biotechnologists do at work and what abilities they need to perform this work. We have been impressed with the complexity and diversity of technical roles and responsibilities, and the importance of the skills that bench workers bring to their jobs. This book emerges partly from our experiences working with students and our explorations into the nature of the laboratory workplace*.

This book also results from our personal experiences in the laboratory. As graduate students we struggled to master the "laboratory lore" that was passed among "post-docs" and graduate students in a not always coherent chain. Some of what is in this book is the systematic introduction to laboratory lore that we wish we had received.

The result of our efforts is not a laboratory manual; this text contains few step-by-step procedures. Nor is it a book about molecular genetics, immunology, or cell culture—there are already many excellent specialized texts and manuals on these topics. This book rather is a textbook/reference manual on basic laboratory methods and the principles that underlie those methods. These basics are important to every biotechnologist, regardless of whether one is cloning DNA or purifying proteins, whether one is working in an academic setting or is employed in a company.

We intend this book to assist students preparing to become biotechnology laboratory professionals, those who already work in the laboratory, and biology students who are learning to operate effectively in the laboratory. Others who may also find this book helpful include high school teachers and their advanced students, and industry trainers. We have endeavored to make this text accessible to beginning college students with a limited science and math background. Some sections, such as the math review in Unit III, could be skipped or skimmed by more experienced readers. At the same time as we tried to make this book practical and accessible, we also endeavored to provide enough background theory so that readers will understand the methods they use and will be prepared to solve the unavoidable problems that arise in any laboratory.

Although we focus on the biotechnology laboratory, the majority of topics we cover are of importance to individuals working in any biology laboratory. A few topics, such as quality regulations and standards, are included because they are important for those working in biotechnology companies. As biotechnology companies mature, their focus shifts from research into commercial production. As this maturation occurs, scientists and technicians often find that they must add terms like "GMP", "ISO 9000", and "quality systems" to their technical vocabulary. This book therefore weaves a conversation about regulations and standards into many chapters.

We are aware that the basic methods in this book (such as how to mix a solution or weigh a sample) are less glamorous than learning how to manipulate DNA, or how to clone a sheep. However, we also know that, in practice, the most sophisticated and remarkable accomplishments of biotechnology are possible only when the most basic laboratory work is done properly.

A Keystone For The Laboratory

When I first started work in a lab as an undergrad, I would often learn of crucial tricks after I had already messed up a procedure and lost an hour or more of work. It's ironic how dependent molecular biologists are on that most ancient means of communication: oral tradition.
When I took a biochem lab, I was introduced to the Seidman and Moore text, which is a fantastic teaching source. For the beginner, this book has chapters on basic units of measurement and mathematics, laboratory organization and regulation (including the government bodies which oversee lab safety), writing standards, and web etiquette. No stone is unturned! Even after one gets the basics mastered, this book has tables on plastics and buffers, showing how they react to heat, light, and other critical data--my biochemistry instructor was even suprised by some of the information on plasticware! This is a companion for one's career in the lab.

Good Biotech Lab Book but Outdated

This book does cover the basics. However, if you can afford it, get their second edition. It is more up to date and has the same and more information. I know this because I have both of them. But if you are tight on your funds and still need a biotech lab book. This is definately not a bad choice.

re-issue of an old paperback

While I would have given the original paperback 4 stars, I feel pretty upset since I already have it, and thought I was buying a NEW release. Shame on me for not looking more closely, but shame on Linda Howard for not letting fans know this is a hard cover re-issue of an old paperback that cost about $5 back in the day. Most authors are up front about re-issues in their promotional material. It's in there, but right at the end. I missed it. Buy the old paperback and save yourself some money.

Powerful writing, yet ultimately frustrating.......

Linda Howard asks the question: "Is there a limit to love, a point where it dies?" She believes there isn't and gives a very movingly works to make the case. I give this book 5 stars because of the powerfully move story (a wee bit dated and the whole book, since it was a series, is limited in scope).
Howard does more in a small book, than any writer outside of Anne Stuart, and has proved consistently to be one of my favourite writers, though I have not really been wowed by the writing in the last few years. It seems JAK, Howard and Roberts are suffering from a formula writing, that is taking the glitter off their craft, and in a move to go more mainstream is causing them to forget the romance roots, and ultimately betraying the very fans that built their careers.
What hurts this books, dating and limitations aside, is although you are carried along with her prose, the power of the relationship she creates, you get to the point where you just do not accept love forgives all. I am sorry, if the man I loved believe I was an embezzler, did not confront me with the evidence FIRST and give me a chance to prove my innocence, had me arrested without the first warning or preparation, refused to take my calls from jail or after I got out....well, I just don't see how I could forgive as easily as Howard's character did. And that in the end, it nearly cripples this book so much.
Tessa Conway is working in accounting of Carter Engineering. The firm is having the losses of large revenue, they bring in Brett Rutland the corporation's top troubleshooter. Brett has the reputation of a pitbull, has little respect for women, uses them and leaves them without a care. He is an emotionless hunter that shows no pity, and he goes after Tessa with the cutting edge of wanting sex and information. But he falls in love with her (or so Howard would try to make you believe). But he resents this so much, nearly hates her in his own way for taking away his control, that when he finds evidence showing Tessa guilty of stealing thousands and thousands of dollars, that he has her arrested. No warning, no chance to prove her innocence, no support. She is arrested and booked. She tries to call him, believing her lover, the man she loves desperately, will make everything all right. He refuses to take her calls. After she gets out of jail, he still refuses to take her calls. She finally goes to see him at his hotel and he cruels says he only slept with her to gain information. This nearly destroys her. All in an effort to save his pride.
Later, in an the middle of the night, he finally realises she could go to prison. He loves her (? sorry that is a big leap of faith for me at this point) and cannot stand to know the woman he loves will go to prison, so he goes to his boss and makes a deal to get the charges dropped. He tells the boss he will repay the money she stole himself, marry her. (nice of him!!). He arranges for the District Attorney to call her in, but she refuses to sign the agreement. She is innocent and will not sign a confession of guilt. It is only THEN he understands that she MIGHT be innocent. Now convinced she is innocent, he has the charges dropped, and suddenly moves in with her to take care of the fragile woman and hunt the real thief.
She shows a moment of fury and lashes out with her fists. But that is about all she does. I am sorry, this really hurt this book. She makes the point that she still loves him. Well, I love so I know you will forgive a lot in your life....but you do not forgive this easily.
Still, with all its faults, this is a powerfully written book. Howard weaves a spell that pulls you along, making you almost believe it...till you take a breath and reality check comes along.
I HIGHLY recommend it for the simple fact it is writing craft at it is highest peak, it is truly emotional...your heart will pound when she is arrested and finally comes to grips with the fact her lover is the one pressing charges. Just sorry, that the confined treatment of the series romance, pushed Howard to take the easy road in the solution.

I started to read this and per the style, flipped to the copyright page: this is a re-release of a 1985 book, and while I find some of Howard's older titles okay, the weak heroine/improbably hard male main character grated.

a one-act play concerning a practical joke

This one-act play was first performed in London, 1899 at the St. James Theatre. It was revived in 1902 where it ran over 100 performances.

Six gentlemen are spending the night at a hotel in a small country town. At the beginning of the play, the men have just heard a story about a supposed ghost inhabiting the hotel. One of the travelers loves theatricals, and when a few of the others are out of the room, he wagers that he can scare someone if he dresses up as the ghost.

The stage directions are quite thorough. You know exactly where each actor is move, sit and stand, and what he is to do. There are two endings to the play, in case "the above tragic termination would be too serious."

I feel misled. The cover clearly states this book ...

I feel misled. The cover clearly states this book provides a "record/playback" feature. I assumed that would be located on their internet site and available as an app. I have not been able to find this anywhere. What is available are flashcards (always helpful) and you can listen to audio answers to the exercises you complete in the book, but it is difficult to follow along.

UPDATE 07/13/2015:
AFTER numerous emails/phone calls to McGraw Hill tech support, I received this email today:

Hello Mike, I just received this information from our Editorial Office"McGraw-Hill Education Language Lab App consists of periodic releases of Updates that incorporate content for additional titles and new functionality. Unfortunately, the latest version has experienced some delays, so is running behind the release of the new edition of the "Practice Makes Perfect Spanish Verb Tenses" book. We anticipate the new release, containing the app features mentioned in the book, within the next two to three weeks. We apologize for this delay, "

Also misled. Not only is that record/playback feature missing ...

Also misled. Not only is that record/playback feature missing (as stated on the cover), the entire volume appears exactly the same as the 2nd edition and seems to be merely be a reprint of the second edition. The one saving grace is that is a bit cheaper than the second edition.
