A new contribution to the Great Books of the Western World

`Reality Spirituality and Modern Man' would seem to be David R. Hawkins' contribution to the Great Books of the Western World, and to the great conversation which arises from those books and their readers.

To the epochal crisis in faith and trust that extends through politics, academia, religion, and family life, Hawkins serenely suggests a series of counterbalances, resolutions, recontextualizations, and clarifications. The book builds piece by piece a new context by which to understand reality, but more of that in a moment.

His matter of fact style is heavily referenced, with occasional brilliant rhetorical flourishes, and a rich stock of wit in words and images. The references are a feast of interesting leads to new and substantial fields of knowledge, and Hawkins has considerately put comments to the bibliographic references that let you know something of their significance, and thus whether you might wish to follow them up or not. These notes have led me to many rich discoveries.

This is by far the most erudite of Doctor David R. Hawkins' books, and that factor sometimes makes it seem as if one cannot see the forest for the trees. It is a complex book, but many important books are complex and yet rewarded persistent readers greatly.

Much of the book would seem to be a series of contrasts between true and false, essence and appearance, the world as it is and the world as it appears to be. These sophisticated chapters taken on their own are powerful challenges to the reader to examine his own presumptions and preconceptions about society, science, religion, spirituality, and basic epistemology (how we know what we know). But as I said, the chapters are cumulative in their effect, and the overarching vision the book presents is beyond my words to represent.

The culminating chapters of the book present the world as an artefact of human collective perception and with striking clarity reveals the simply unreality of much of the prevailing conceptions about the nature of the world we live in. The stark simplicity and purity of the concluding view is beautiful, authoritative, and noble.

I believe that a new `Great Book of the Western World' has passed unheralded into publication in Dr David R. Hawkins' `Reality, Spirituality and Modern Man'.

He explains the discernment of essence from perception at length, issues of paradigm and worldview, and cites historical examples. Included are Dr. Hawkins detailed explanations of Ramana Maharshi's radical instructions regarding "Saving the world," The relationship of the Scopes Monkey trial to our current societies conflicting worldviews, and how harmful influences use the cover of secular and religious appearance to manipulate all aspects of society, including, especially the media. Included are the illumination of spiritual paths for those questioning the traditional teachings of our culture or the existence of God. Despite certain shortcomings, this fictionalized account of the tragedy of Tiananmen Square is as engrossing as it is appalling. When Alex's father, a news cameraman, is assigned to Beijing, Alex leaps at the chance to join him. At loose ends in the alien metropolis, the teenager studies Chinese and explores the city on his bike, filming with a makeshift hidden camera. Not surprisingly, these skills come in handy during both the student protests and the subsequent crackdown. In fact, Alex's avocation, along with his father's profession, seem to have been chosen solely to provide the reader with a bird's-eye view of the events of that brutal spring. Even Alex's obsession with military history seems tacked on in order to facilitate the lumbering symbolism of the novel's conclusion. By contrast, Bell's descriptions of the action in and around the Square are vivid and heartbreaking--there are moments when the searing force of this fragment of recent history shines through the thin characters and eclipses the contrived plot. Ages 12-up.

Grade 6-12-- Alex, 17-year-old war aficionado and son of a Canadian cameraman, accompanies his father to China and becomes enmeshed in the Tiananmen incident of 1989. He gets separated from his father, is befriended by some students, witnesses a good deal of the massacre, and is finally smuggled out by a student who pays for his liberation with her life. This is a blood-and-thunder story, and Bell tells it with gusto. Incidents are piled on one another, background descriptions are very convincing, and at times readers will almost feel they are there. All this amounts to an incredibly compelling novel. Curiously, when the protagonist is not in China, he becomes somewhat one-dimensional. The beginning is a tad contrived to lead to the real meat of the novel, and the ending is pat beyond common decency (in a grand, melodramatic scene, Alex destroys all his war toys back in comfy surburban Toronto). Yet the preponderant part of this novel is marvelously realized, partially from the immediacy of using first-person narration, partially from telling vignettes that really bring the time, place, and situation to life in a most memorable way. There is also a certain ring of truth about some elements of the story that resonates long after putting this novel down. A little secretive pleasure

If you want a big, glossy picture book of the Forbidden City don't buy this book. If you want something lovely that you'll keep forever, buy it indeed! This is the "Little Black Book" on the subject of the palace itself and so much more. It's a small, neat, lovely to handle edition whose only colour is in the red endpapers that are exactly the red of the Forbidden City's palace walls. The old, grainy, black and white photographs add to the pleasure and increase the feeling that you are getting something true and genuine instead of just another travel guide. Geremie Barme's text is erudite, as you'd expect from a Professor of Asian History, but it's also deliciously gossipy and has a pace and feeling for detail that is never boring. Professor Barme is especially good on the modern uses the Forbidden City has been put to, and his views on the Communist era are refreshingly balanced, putting Chairman Mao into the "Imperial" context very nicely. I especially loved it because it had a picture of an event I actually attended: the 1976 funeral of Chou En Lai. The shock of seeing it, just as it was, came as a delightful surprise. A lovely book. It feels Chinese.

This book is a vivid description of the "events" at Tian An Men Square that fateful spring in 1989. This novel is about a seventeen year old boy named Alex who travels with his cameraman father to China, and witnesses the Tian An Men Square massacre.

In this book the author pays good attention to the facts while weaving a story around them. He used a journal format; from the point of view of the protagonist, Alex. William Bell (the author) paints a vivid picture of the horrendous tragedy in Beijing, and brings a realistic quality to his fiction. The characters develop well during the story, but the secondary characters are very one-dimensional.

The author brings a real and personal quality that to many of us is simply a far-off event that happened to a bunch of people we don't know. Although it is realistic, it is not a historian's account. Overall, it is a good, compelling, and vividly detailed novel.

A very graphic and personal account of a Chinese tragedy.

"Forbidden City" was a powerful and dramatically graphic book which described the
personal account of the Chinese tragedy which took place in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, in 1989.
The story centres around the struggle for freedom which young revolutionaries had during a time when
the Chinese government was unstable. Horrifying details illustrate the horrors that the Chinese people
coped with. Surprisingly, these horrors were the result of the martial law handed down by the Chinese government
to stop the Chinese citizen's cries for freedom and democracy. This book truly portrayed the horrific and
uncivilized side of mankind. Images of bodies being crushed by looming Chinese tanks in the streets of Beijing and
the careless bloodshed of innocent people in the centre of Tiananmen Square paint a picture of true brutality
and coldness which we as humans take for granted in such times of chaos, not only in China but around the world.
This book portrays the delicacy of life and how we all take for granted not only life itself, but our God-given freedom
which we as humans consider as a right, which in reality, is a priviledge which we fight for each and every day
of our lives.
The central theme in "Forbidden City" is similar to the themes in "The Holy Bible" in that struggles for freedom take place throughout the book and
involve all cultures. In contrast, "Forbidden City" was a much more personalized account of the tragedy which took place.
I was able to explore the mind of a visitor to China who witnessed the brutal images in Tiananmen Square and was deeply affected by what was seen.
"The Holy Bible", similar to "Forbidden City", provided a sense of hope for those in their stuggles for freedom and the oppressors, which, through
over whelming strength and perseverence, broke free of their dictators and retained their identity, living with pride and ostentation.
I recommend this book for people who feel as though they are oppressed by others whether it be parents, bosses or teachers who
feel the need to break loose of what is holding them back. This truly dramatic and thought-prevoking book will provide you with the
inspiration you need to continue on in your own lives having pride in your culture, family, and most importantly, yourself.

For more than just architects that build buildings

I used this book to create a process to review the architecture of software systems. All software architects should read this book to get a better understanding of how to "get" requirements from their clients. The process of using "snow cards" (analysis cards) is a great communication tool that I have used to both get requirements and to provide feedback to projects that we were reviewing.

One section I always refer software architects to is the "cost estimation" section. If you are creating a building, you have to come in very close to your estimated cost if you want to stay in business. Compare this to the estimation of how much a software project will cost because we do not have a good estimation process. I always liked the estimate that you can park 125 cars per acre when you are trying to estimate how big a parking garage should be. We need to develop similar guidelines/estimates for software projects.

We were fortunate enough to have spent time with William Pena because he was very interested in how we had applied the techniques in his book to the development of software architectures.

Absolute must for minimally competent architects to define their customers needs!

Again....newer version of an older book, just keeps getting better, and more and more relevant everyday! It's a lost art, architects who can develop architectural programs! An absolute must for the genius student architects, or the interns, and even those licensed to be "minimally competent in the practice of architecture". (No I'm not being mean, that is actually what it says when you pass your architectural state boards). Now, someone turn the next version into a helpful app!

Lots of great information, gets a little wordy and long at times

I purchased this book because it was recommended reading for one of the seven architectural exams I need to pass to become an architect. The book is very well written and is full of information that I didn't need on the test, but I will definitely use in my career. In the middle of the book it becomes a little long winded and wordy, but the information the book provides is invaluable. I recommend it highly!

Flowering Plant Families of the New World

The book only covers the families and not the genera or species. It is a bit technical and not laid out as interesting as it could be. It does have a lot of information which is why I gave it 5 stars. The other reason I gave it five stars is that information about tropical flora is scarce and the number of species is extremely large. You want to have all the information you can find if you are interested in tropical plants. So you need this book on your shelf along with any others that might be available. Used copies as listed on Amazon are quite reasonable and my copy was in very good condition for a very reasonable price. If this same book covered temperate flora instead of tropical flora then I wouldn't give it five stars. My recommendation would be to buy a good used copy and add it to your collection.

In its way, this has everything going for it. Compiled by the top specialists, printed on glossy paper, illustrated throughout with fine line-drawings and with a section of excellent color photographs. The color photographs are brought together in a single section in the middle of the book, and the quality has to be seen to be believed.

The down-side of this book (such as it is) is its format: it crams together basic information on an enormous amount of plant families in a single volume. It therefore is, of necessity, limited to broad outlines and offers an overview only.

Easy to read, well written guide!

In order to understand the deeper meaning of the book, The Girl on the Train, a debut novel in the thriller sector written by Paula Hawkins, the summary and analysis is a very vital aspect. A well structured guide, this book plays the perfect companion for the original novel. It provides clarity and conciseness to the novels plot. A number of points that would otherwise be overlooked or missed are highlighted providing the reader with a better understanding without being lost somewhere between the lines.

This guide is short, very well written and clearly explains all the characters and key characters in detail. An avid reader would understand the fact that if at any point a difficulty is faced, the rest of the journey through the book would be full of obstacles and misunderstandings. Great companion piece!

I love to read, and I tend to read really fast in order to get through the vast amount of books that I want to read. So, as a skim reader, I often realize after the fact that I’ve missed key pieces of information as I’ve read a book.

After reading The Girl on the Train, I realized that I probably hadn’t gotten everything I could out of the book and I found that I was still summarizing and analyzing plot details weeks after reading it. I did a little research on Amazon and stumbled across this plot analysis book.

What a great idea! With this book, I was able to pinpoint what I had missed during my first reading of The Girl on the Train. I love how it covers the chapters, the characters, and just an overall analysis of the work. Then, in conclusion, it gives you questions to consider. This was exactly the companion piece I needed after reading the original work. I’m very excited to have stumbled across this book.

Brilliant summary and analysis book, 5 Stars all round!

My little cousin chose to base her assignment on "The Girl on the Train" written by Paula Hawkins, she had some trouble understanding the book and like most teenagers she also left it to the last minute.I am a big fan of these summary and analysis books by BOOK*SENSE and to my luck there was one on Paula Hawkins book, I instantly snapped it up and both my cousin and I read through it.
This book has a clear concise description of all the personalities in the novel and a chapter to chapter summary of all of the events that also unfold, there are also plot and story line specific descriptions. We both enjoyed reading the book and had in depth discussions about what we had read and the best news is that my little cousin received top marks on her essay.

Yes, it's THE book for Technical Theatre -- but . . .

I use this text for all my Tech Theatre classes, from Basic Stagecraft on up to more advanced 300- and 400- level classes, and I ditto what other reviewers have said about its being comprehensive, thorough, and accurate. The only small problem I have with it is that it really isn't designed for students who've never taken a Theatre class before. For a 100-level class, there should be a little more background on definitions of the broad concepts like Art, Theatre, and Drama (and why there is a difference between the last two), and what exactly the work of the Playwright, Director, and Actors is and how the work of the design artists supports that. (I use Gillette for 100-level classes because I haven't really found anything else that does precisely what I would want a Basic Stagecraft book to do.) For a 200-level class, though, or a 100-level class where they've already taken a more traditional Theatre Appreciation class where they've already absorbed those concepts, it's THE book to use.

One of the standards

As a textbook for entry-level technical and design theatre, this book is indispensable. It is both up-to-date and Gillette is continually reaching out to professionals in theatre to ensure this book teaches you how things are really done. In the sixth edition, the chapter on props has been substantially reworked with input by Sandra Strawn, professor of Properties Design and Production at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, along with help from members of the Society of Properties Artisan Managers, who represent the heads of prop shops in many of the major regional and educational theatres in the US, including New York City. No other book on props approaches that level of expertise, let alone a textbook.

Perfect single source guide.

I am a technical director of 18 plus years, I've been doing technical theatre for 25 years, and now teach technical theatre at the University level. This one book is my go to, all in one text book.

With the exception of hands on backstage experience, this is the best source I have come across for introduction to all things technical in theatre. Highly recommended.
