Want To Learn something New?

Have you ever felt annoyed of your younger brother or sister? I appreciate this book, because it teaches me to be kind to my parents, and help them out more. This book will show you how to be more patient with them and appreciate them more. For example, the character's brother had cancer. He felt really frustrated. He had to help his parent out by cleaning the house. He felt like he couldn't do it but he kept on trying so much, and he finally got to do something. It also includes the idea of trusting the power you have. An example of this is because this character helped people out and, people helped him realize that he had a special power. He always looked for a way to help people. An example of this is because there was a part where the character read, a letter about parents getting home and being tired. Also when parents would just wish kids would ask how there day was. This book influenced me a lot by teaching me to be kind to my parents and help them out more. It made me work in a lot of things and really trust in the things that I can do. I think that this book can teach a lot of new things to people. For example, to be more patient and to use perseverance in my daily routine. I definitely recommend this book to people who really want to learn something new. This book is in Spanish, but for those who speak it, go ahead and read a great book! I'm Amy, and I am 11 years old, and I really liked this book.

Strategic Management by Freeman is a classic. It should be required reading for every manager and MBA student. When Freeman wrote the book, stakeholder thinking was still rather new and unusual - at least in its explicit form -, while it is now, thanks in large part to Freeman, widely accepted.
The book is, like many management books, relevant both to academic research and to day-to-day business. But, unlike many management books, this publications can actually be read both by academics and by managers, which may explain in part its impact.
Thje book makes clear that strategy, especially in the stakeholder-form, requires a proper understanding of both ethics and systems thinking. It should at least make the reader think about both.

Very good but a bit dated

Relatively short read that covers all of the topics related to understanding the stakeholder approach. The examples/cases are very good but you have to have been around a while to even remember some of the names. If you look at them for the structure of the problem and the solution you should be fine.

If you are looking for a sports manga series and love football, “Eyeshield 21″ vol. 1 is highly recommended!

In Japan, American football may not be too popular compared to the international futbol (soccer), but there are a few high schools that have football teams and the NFL does have a game played in Japan, helping to spread the game’s popularity.

But in 2002, writer Riichiro Inagaki and illustrator Yusuke Murata introduced American football to a broader audience through their manga “Eyeshield 21″ which has been featured on the very popular Weekly Shonen Jump, has led to several videogames and also a 145-episode anime series which lasted from 2o05-2008. And now for 35 volumes, “Eyeshield 21″ continues to entertain masses through its manga series currently available from Viz Media as part of their Shone Jump Advanced line.

“Eyeshield 21″ revolves around a young teenager named Sena Kobayakawa who has passed his entrance exams at his local high school, Deimon Private Senior High School. The school where his childhood friend Mamori Anezaki attends. Both Sena and Mamori are close because all throughout his life, Sena has been bullied and Mamori has been there to protect him.

Living his life as a gopher for other friends, Sena hasn’t had any true friends until he meets the devil-looking Yoichi Hiruma and the very huge Ryokan Kurita who try to get Sena to join their football team.

Of course, Sena doesn’t know how to play football but being the new kid at school, but still he gets bullied all the time by those who try to make him their gopher.

Fortunately, the huge Kurita ends up taking care of them. Out for revenge, the bullies start to pick on Sena once again but Sena is sick and tired of getting beaten up and when they go after him, he demonstrates a skill which he has had for a long time, speed. Because Sena has lived his life running away from bullies, he has improved his skills at running, cutting and doing all he can avoid the bullies. Immediately, Hiruma wants to utilize him on the Deimon High School Devil Bats football team.

Sena just wants to become a team manager but Hiruma wants Sena to be the team’s running back. And because Hiruma wants to make sure that no one can steal him for their high school or let alone another sport at school, he plans on a disguise that no one but he, Sena and Kurita will know and that is putting an eyeshield on a football helmet and giving Sena a #21 jersey, and going by the nickname “Eyeshield 21″.

For Hiruma and Kurita, their goal is to make it to the Christmas Bowl, where the two best high school teams compete against each other. But considering the fact that Deimon High have been terrible, with Eyeshield 21, can they beat their first opponent for the season…The Koigahama Cupids? And will they find enough players for this season?

JUDGMENT CALL:

I have been a big fan of sports-based manga and in Japan a lot of their sports manga and anime are big hits. From the soccer-driven series “Captain Tsubasa”, the basketball series “Slam Dunk”, the baseball series “Touch”, the tennis series “Tennis no Oujisama” (Prince of Tennis) and many of them have this underdog vs. the better team type of mentality.

Yes, there is a banality when it comes to sports manga series but there is often this side of supernatural element that an athlete has. A super kick, a special tennis serving or hitting ability and with “Eyeshield 21″, what makes the series so exciting is that every team has its special individuals with unique talents. But when it comes to the Deimon Devil Bats (the protagonist team), these guys are like a group of misfits put together in hopes to accomplishing their goal of making it to the Christmas Bowl. But they are surely talented. Sena (Eyeshield 21) has this special ability of his running and in this latest volume, he hones that talent and makes himself even better. We also see new characters pop up and joins the team and definitely see how everyone works together, faces adversity together as a team. But for Deimon High School, these bunch of misfits have pride and also have what it takes to surprise everyone they have come up against.

Similar to other sports anime in which there is an underdog getting involved with sports and displays a tremendous skill, “Eyeshield 21″ definitely showcases that into the storyline but with the characters, in this case the team is more like the “Bad News Bears” and with the “The Devil Bats”, the team consists of characters that are just wild and crazy. Actually, all teams have characters that are wild and crazy and I suppose that is what makes “Eyeshield 21″ so interesting and enjoyable.

But I also like the fact that Sena is somewhat of an inspiration to those who have been bullied. Instead of using his weakness as a crutch, he turns his speed to a a secret weapon for the Deimon High Devil Bats but most importantly, for a quiet guy with no friends, the camaraderie of his team is what he needs in his life and definitely gives him the confidence that he needs to play in sports but to be the best he can be on the field.

The story is well-written, the character designs are well-done and I like how there are extra pages of stories and character info. included with this manga!

If you are looking for a sports manga series and love football, “Eyeshield 21″ vol. 1 is highly recommended!

Amazing Series.

Eyeshield 21 is the only American football manga that I know of but it ends up surpassing sports to become an amazing manga.Though being a shonen makes it somewhat predictable, the characters are vividly shown with not one character being mere filler.Change is seen in all of the main characters which is a wonderful thing in manga because it makes them memorable and more human like.The art is fantastic with each moment of action being distinct.The story is a typical nerd becomes jock though Eyeshield 21 does it in a way in which such a typical change becomes something worth watching.

Meh.

I wish I could say that I liked Map To the Stars, but it fell so flat for me that I tripped over it on the sidewalk. Terrible analogy but accurate all the same.

Lemme just give you a list of all the reasons this book didn’t work for me:

Insta-love done poorly. When Annie and Graham aka the Movie Star first meet, he assumes she’s a fangirl that’s managed to weasel her way into his hotel room before he gets there. Their later interactions suggest that they just have so much spark they fired off at each other the first time they met. You know that story: boy and girl dislike each other and lash out, only to later realize how much they lurv each other and that’s why they lashed out. Besides the whole “I like you so I’m going to treat you like crap” trope that I am SO TIRED OF, it’s just overplayed and in this case, completely unbelievable.
Mom and Annie left Georgia for #reasons (that were stupid). I began to suspect, not too far into the novel, why Annie and her mother just uprooted and left their home and I told myself if I was right, I was going to be really mad. And I was right. But since the big reveal isn’t until the last 10% of the book or so, I felt like I may as well finish it out so I could at least get another completed book in my Goodreads challenge. Yep, that’s right. I finished it for the numbers. I didn’t finish it because I liked it or anything crazy like that. Anyway, I digress. The reason was stupid and lacked any sort of believability at all. No mother is going to uproot her kid during senior year of high school because of such a minor thing. You know what would have been more believable? If mom left to take this job and Annie stayed with Dad. That actually makes sense to me, but that wouldn’t have worked for an author who was looking for a plot device to get her prince and pauper together. Eye roll.
Annie and Graham were soooooooooooooo melodramatic. One minute they hated each other and the next they were kissy-kissy, and then again hated each other. Graham tells her he can’t be seen with her, and then takes her out. She tells him she’s tired of his crap, and then smoochies with him. Yeah, I guess that’s actually typical of some teenage emotion, but when paired with the rest of the story, it just was blah.
The ending was too neat. All this drama and everything ends just perfectly (sorry not sorry for that spoiler). I like when not every single thing is easy for characters. Yes, even in HEAs.
I actually did enjoy all the backstage scenes, because, whether or not that was real, they lent a bid of credibility to Graham’s lifestyle and story. And there were some really funny quotes in there – if Map To the Stars did anything well, it was funny at times.

“I’m a producer. You ever try to talk a neurotic actor off an emotional cliff? They’re nearly as bad as writers. I’m basically one hissy fit short of earning Dr. Phil status at this point in the game.”
So, look, Map To the Stars wasn’t a terribly awful book. Some readers who are looking for a teen romance with some Hollywood thrown in for fun might actually like this. It’s made for hot summer days on a beach, but it’s also a book you wouldn’t be upset if it got sand in the spine or wet from splashes…or drowned in the ocean altogether. I am highly critical of contemporary romances, teen or not, so just take my opinion with a grain of salt… and a side of margarita.

Quick, satisfying contemporary YA of first love and self-discovery!

What a fun contemporary YA romance! Yes, the premise of the movie star falling for the nobody narrator is a cliche at this point, but Jen Malone does it so well, and adds such realistic details that it made it such fun to read! The first person POV is both fresh and refreshing as her small town heroine gets her first taste of Hollywood, making a mess of things along the way.

Annie Shelton grew up in Georgia, so far from the bright lights of LA that she was never interested in tabloid gossip or crushing on hot movie stars. Her best friend Wynn was the total opposite and a great counterpoint to Annie's hard focus on reality. When Annie and her mom move out to California, its not to pursue dreams, but to escape the reality of her father's deception.

Graham Cabot grew up in LA-LA-land, on screen from an early age, and now a genuine movie star at seventeen. Girls throw themselves at him all the time, but the real Graham is actually a little shy and insecure. He admits to Annie that he's never had a real girlfriend, hasn't even had real friends since his elementary school years, before the fame and fortune changed his life.

Their budding relationship is cute and sweet, and the one-POV storytelling has the reader riding along with Annie's confusion at Graham's shifting attitudes and emotions. I won't give away any more of the story except to say the ending is totally satisfying and everything worked out the way I wanted it to. This is a standalone read, no series or setup for the next book, which I also found refreshing. Quick, satisfying contemporary YA romance of first love and self discovery that I can totally recommend!

Map to fun, starry-eyed teens

I don’t read a lot of YA romance novels.

Let me clarify: I read a lot of YA books that have romance in them, and I’ve written flirty, romantic sequences in my own books. But I tend to gravitate more towards books that have something else (a contemporary issue or a fantasy/speculative/magical-realism element) driving the story with the romance being a subplot. Jen Malone’s Map to the Stars very well may be the first strictly YA romance novel I’ve ever read. After all, I’m a forty-something-year-old man and thus probably not the target audience.

I picked up a copy for my Kindle on the strength of the humor in the first chapter when it was read by the author at a YA book-reading event I went to. My daughters found the notion of a movie star getting a facial of nightingale poop to be utterly hysterical. And it is. The Hollywood satire peppered throughout the book made me laugh heartily enough to overcome occasional eye-rolls at main character Annie’s early waffling back and forth regarding her feelings for teen heartthrob Graham Cabot.

So here’s the basic plot: Annie’s mother has moved her out to L.A. (from a small town in Georgia) to be a stylist to the stars, and they get assigned to Graham Cabot’s worldwide promotional tour for his latest movie. Back home, Annie’s best friend Wynn is a huge Graham Cabot fangirl, but Annie’s first run-in with him is a total disaster. She lumps him together with all the other Hollywood phonies, he flirts a little, she flirts back but questions his motives, he turns out to be a really sweet guy. Romance ensues.

Okay, so maybe there are some signs of the “dreaded” insta-love going on, but you know what? Big deal! I was a teenager once, and I remember getting tingles if a pretty girl innocently and platonically touched my arm, and I remember suddenly deciding I loved them. And I know girls feel that way too—I had enough female friends that at one point wrote out their names with their crush’s last name attached. Insta-attraction—or better yet, insta-interest—happens in the real world. Love—all emotions—are irrational. Teens—well, most people—behave irrationally at times. And this is a fun story or two teens—one that’s normal but skeptical and one that’s airbrushed but sheltered and seeking normalcy—finding each other and just trying to have fun and do the things teens do.

Teens make mistakes, and Annie and Graham make some big ones along the way. Because he’s in the spotlight, being seen in public with a regular girl could harm his image. Or it could alienate his fan base of tween and teen girls that want to be writing his last name after theirs. That’s the main conflict for about the second half of the book, and it was fun watching them try to have a relationship, even though I correctly predicted the consequences they’d face.

Annie and Graham are likeable enough lead, and the book has a solid supporting cast. Though Wynn’s appearances are limited to emails and video chats, she’s well developed and a lot of fun. Bodyguard Roddy, who’s in on the couple’s ruses, has some nice hidden layers to him. Annie’s mom is well-balanced between supportive and overprotective, and her producer-friend Joe is an absolute riot whenever he appears.

The book is filled with pop culture references, as it should be when partially satirizing Hollywood and online-trending, but they don’t stick to one particular era. Some have stood or will stand the test of time, but some others are contemporary that may not. And some of them were from when I was a teen, including a Grease 2 reference that I didn’t quite believe both characters would get.

There’s no surprise that there’s a HEA ending, as that’s required for the genre, but I found it ironic after all the Hollywood satirizing that the ending was so Hollywood-ized. The only thing missing from the typical Hollywood-made teen romantic comedy ending was someone in the crowd starting a slow clap.

Overall, the satire is funny, the characters are fun, their chemistry is believable, and the ending is satisfying. No new ground is broken, but there’s nothing wrong with comfort food (like the cookies Annie’s Mom bakes), and this is an enjoyable, fun, light read. No map necessary for it to find its FOUR STARS.

About the Author
Mark Webber is a former Formula One driver who raced for Minardi, Jaguar, Williams, and Red Bull. He was twice winner of the Monaco Grand Prix, as well as the British and Brazilian Grands Prix. In 2010 he controversially missed out on the World Championship to teammate Sebastian Vettel. In June 2013 Webber announced his retirement from Formula One and subsequently joined Porsche on a long-term deal, racing in the premier LMP1 sportscar category of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

A must-read!

I was never a fan of Mark Webber's when he was racing. In fact I'll go as far as to say that I actually loved to hate him. When the book was released I bought it expecting 400 odd pages of complaining and Vettel bashing. I was looking forward to getting angry and cursing him whilst reading it. I was disappointed. Mark has delivered an insightful, enjoyable and incredibly balanced account of his life in the Formula 1 fast lane. The book is easy to read, keeps the pace up well and you don't need to be a motorsport fan to enjoy it. I opened the book disliking the man with a passion; I closed it with newfound respect and admiration. Well done Mark, you have a new fan.

Fantastic for F1 fans

I’ve been so into non-fiction lately and as well as my love for Formula 1, I thought it would be a good time to make a start on my F1 reading library with Mark Webber’s autobiography – Aussie Grit. Now, Mark Webber is a driver that I didn’t originally know an awful lot about. Aside from his infamous rivalry with ex team-mate, Sebastian Vettel, I pretty much knew bollock all-else about his life so I went into this book with a completely open mind and all I can say is, if you like Formula 1, whether you watched Mark race or not, read it.

Mark Webber is such an endearing character to watch both on and off the track. He’s straight and to the point, doesn’t beat around the bush and his no-nonsense attitude all comes across in his book. The way it’s written, the “webberisms” and despite being ghost-written, you can feel Mark in every page. As autobiographies go, it wasn’t all too serious. He talks about his racing career, home life and relationships but all with the sense of “this was this, that was that, nothing more to it”. Like I said, very straight to the point fella. I liked it.

If you like F1 in any way, shape or form, then this would be a fantastic read. Despite finding it a little hard to follow near the beginning when Mark spoke about his journey to F1 (I won’t lie, I don’t know an awful lot about other racing categories), as soon as he reached F1, I was completely hooked and fascinated by all the “behind the scenes” stuff we, as viewers, don’t usually see or hear. There is so much, so damn much that goes on between a racing team, the personnel and the drivers and not all of it’s pretty. Some parts of this book shocked me and I gotta say how much I feel for Mark throughout parts of his career. But obviously that’s open to opinion, depending on what driver was your favourite.

I’m not lying when I say it made me laugh, cry and smile. He talks about some very real things, some of which we can all relate to because let’s face it, we can’t all relate to a F1 racing career and I loved hearing about Mark the racer and also Mark the person under the helmet. If you loved Mark before, you’ll love him even more after reading this. An absolutely fantastic autobiography; entertaining, eye-opening and brutally honest. An absolute must-read for F1 fans.
