His storytelling powers have not failed; neither has his poetic skill with words, nor his vivid imagination. His long-awaited sixth book sings with the familiar elegiac Southern cadences, his prose is sweepingly lyrical (if sometimes melodramatic), unabashedly sentimental (if sometimes indigestibly schmaltzy). The hero, Jack McCall, describes himself as a man on the run from his past: the suicide of his beloved wife; the destructive influence of his icy, manipulative mother and mean, bullying, alcoholic father; the betrayal of his youthful ideals, his faith in the Catholic Church, his boyhood friends. There is, of course, the familiar theme of dysfunctional families; in addition to the McCalls, two other family units vie for the dubious title of most messed-up. But Conroy has added a new element here, by dramatizing his conviction that the "unbearable wound" of Vietnam was our country's spiritual Holocaust. Conroy takes on these emotionally laden issues in chapters so direct and powerful that readers will be moved by his intimacy with the material, and perhaps astonished by his authority over it. Conroy meshes complex plot lines with ease. Jack, a food and travel writer, fled with his toddler daughter, Leah, to Rome in 1982 in the wake of his wife Shyla's suicidal jump from a bridge in Charleston, S.C., and her parents' subsequent lawsuit to deny him custody of Leah. He returns home some years later because his mother is dying of leukemia. In addition to becoming embroiled in family tension, he begins a slow process of reconciliation with Shyla's parents, who eventually tell him the stories of their respective Holocaust experiences; with his first love, Ledare Ashley, now a scriptwriter employed by their youthful chum, Mike Hess, to write a screenplay of their growing-up years; and with his parents and siblings. He witnesses the return to Waterford of another friend, Jordan Elliot, who has been presumed dead for 18 years after he was accused of murder during a protest against the Vietnam War, and who was betrayed by the fourth member of their boyhood clan, Capers Middleton, who is now running for governor of South Carolina. Though the book suffers from some florid digressions (a fish story that makes Jonah's adventure seem tame, a totally inappropriate shaggy-dog tale), it is always passionately sincere. Conroy's dark humor has its usual sardonic edge, and his characters' rat-a-tat repartee is laden with casual obscenities and jocular insults. As expected, the characters are larger than life-impossibly beautiful, romantic, witty; in particular, Jack's precocious daughter may seem too mature, sweet, graceful, poised and smart to be true. In the end, of course, as Jack understands that everybody in his life carries a tragic secret equal to the anguish he bears, he achieves healing in the very community, and the very South, he had been determined to leave forever. 750,000 first printing; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club main selection; author tour.

They won't be disappointed. Conroy evolves from the Margaret Mitchell school of southern writing, where everything must be Big--the smartest, most beautiful people on the planet living the biggest lives on the grandest sets and, of course, wracked by the greatest tragedies. It's all here in the story of Jack McCall of Waterford, South Carolina, his five brothers, drunken father, white-trash mother, and Holocaust-surviving in-laws. Nothing small happens in this book: the McCalls' story is played out against World War II, Auschwitz, the sixties, and, of course, the South in all its triumph and tragedy. Even the little moments are big in their way: the best cup of cappuccino, the most beautiful southern evening, the freshest shrimp, the most precocious kid. And yet, sneer as we will, we also must admit that Conroy plays the high-concept game as well as anyone. Like Mitchell, he builds narrative momentum that is impossible to resist, and he writes with a hammy eloquence that, while often infuriating, fits his subject matter perfectly. A Treasure

I read this book when it was originally published. I have always said it is my favorite book. I decided to read it again now that I am 65. Beach Music is still my favorite book! Baby-Boomers must read it to revisit the Vietnam war and what it did to our generation. It relates to the country now as we struggle to find our way. You must read it to remember the Holocaust and what can happen when we turn a blind eye to monsters who hate us. I wish the world still had Pat Conroy to write our stories in his beautiful language that plays out his interpretations in our minds like a great movie. I will miss him so.

A story of coming of age to generational challenges superbly in a story which superbly unfolds. The reader experiences what it's like to grow up in the south, the culture of Italy and some dark experiences of Families who survived Aushwitz.
Endearingly dysfunctional families and teens of the 60's in the south guide you through both the adventure and misadventures of their lives. ❤️ Jack

Very, very detailed and descriptive of his characters and the story setting of South Carolina and it's wonderful Low Country. The reader feels as though they are right there almost watching the story unfold. Will miss his writings.

"gday mate i was off on a fabumouse adventure to australia but between surfing with sharks.being chased by poisonous snakes and getting lost in the outback. i was beginning to wonder if this trip down under was really a good idea. kangaroos and koalas and crocs oh my would i ever see new mouse city again"

The whole 'Stilton' series is very stimulating. Pressing our youngster to voraciously read & read. In this issue they teach: Uluru/Ayer's Rock, Aborigines, dreamtime, and about all thoses crazy down-under animals. Fun stuff!

I’ve heard Lisa’s book called “The Rocky for Moms,” and it’s SO TRUE. Lisa’s book is a battle cry for all of us who have had those kinds of conversations with ourselves late at night - the "tomorrow, I'll get up early and change my habits for good" self-talk that we don't always follow through on. For all of us who have promised ourselves that TOMORROW would be different: that we’d wake up early to work out, that we’d say no to donuts and yes to fruit, that this time, we’d really commit and stick to and see through whatever goal we happen to be chasing (or want to be chasing).

Finally a complete Pokedex

The guide to the Kanto Region is useful, following in the same pattern as the Johto guide already released and the Sinnoh guide released for Platinum. However, the real use for this book is the complete Pokedex.
The 'Dex has every pokemon in it, with the useful charts we've all been waiting for. Using this guide you can easily see the full set of moves a pokemmon can learn, from levels gained, TMs, egg moves, and moves taught by the Move Maniac or learned through the Battle Frontier. This is all on top of the basics you would expect from a Pokedex, being a list of abilities, egg groups, stats, pokedex entries, and even Pokeathlon perfromance. Also listed are ways to obtain each pokemon in all five of the fourth generation games.
Overall a very useful guide to some of the best games to hit the Nintendo DS.

A complete PokeDex for the DS Generation

Pokemon games have generally been released a few every generation. The original games (Red, Blue, and Yellow) for the GameBoy are considered the 1st Generation games; the sequels built for the GB Color(Silver, Gold, and Crystal) are considered 2nd Gen, etc. That makes the DS gen games the 4th Gen PKMN games, and this PokeDex/Guide is built with that in mind. New and/or revised move-sets, Pokemon types, evolutions, natures, etc. are detailed and described as they are in the newer 4th Gen games, that is Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, PLatinum, and the new SoulSilver and HeartGold. In other words, those looking for a complete PokeDex for any other game should look elsewhere. Those interested in the 4th Gen games are in for a real treat.

The ultra large (500+ pages) book does exactly what its title says; its a full Kanto guide and a full PokeDex, and it does both, for the most part, extremely well.

The Kanto guide contains full and detailed maps (as are seen in-game), tips, and a complete walkthrough. The walkthrough doesn't start just as you enter the Kanto region, however, it assumes you've already beaten the Elite Four and have gained admission to the Hall of Fame. the guide features things like what Pokemon are found in what location, where items are, and dungeon "connections" (doorway "A" leads to this part of the map). The Battle Frontier, tips for the PokeWalker, the Saffari Zone, and a beefy section that details new battle strategies and PKMN teams all help to make this guide stand out from a simple bare-bones walkthropugh. A nice feature i found was a complete list of what event happens at what date, given that SoulSilver/HeartGold rely heavily on a real time clock, this feature is unbelievably important. Another neat feature was a simple recommend route to completing the entirety of your Kanto quest. The Kanto region is much less linear than the Johto region, and this "recommendation" could be very helpful to some.

One noticeable and disappointing omission is lack of any "real" info on regular trainers. Gym Leaders have a list of used PKMN as well as tips on how to defeat them, but regular trainer have just a name. The guide doesn't show what PKMN a trainer uses. Its unfortunate and is the only reason why this product gets **** instead of 5*.

The PokeDex section includes ALL 493 PKMN, and everyone has a half page devoted to it. Within its space things like possible abilities, moves (learned, TM, Move Maniac, Egg, and Battle Frontier moves all covered), evolutions, info (the same as the in-game PKDX info about the PKMN), egg type, and specially useful for completionists is the location in which you can find the PKMN (and in what 4th Gen game).

All pages have an abundance of color and are never boring. Art, images, and tips can be found in EVERY page. The edges of the pages have a mostly solid color (EX, Walkthrough = orange, Dex = Red) that makes quickly opening up the book to a certain section very easy. The same concept is applied to the Dex, where 1st Gen PKMN can be found in the pages with a green hue on the top/bottom. remember that these colors can be seen while the book is closed, so the navigation is the 500+ page book is simple.

The product is just about everything any PokeFan could wish for (the only flaw being the skimpy trainer detail), tips, strategies, PKMN info, maps, etc. Its built with a sturdy frame, is large, and the pages are nice and thick. At the very reasonable price, im very easily recommending it.

The most useful book I have read on this topic.

Love this book. I am an electrical engineer. This self help book is very well written and potentially will save you handreds and perhaps many thousands of $$. It is clear and easy to understand. Competent professional advice in just sufficient detail to help you properly complete your project of becoming disaster-proof. Imagine what can happen during a freezing winter with your house pipes if your electrical power goes off for a day? What are the restoration costs of a flooded unfrozen house? The areas of this book that I liked most are the quick selection checklist with author's pics, the generator comparison examples, and the description of common mistakes commited by some other home generator selection guides. Overall impression: this is the most useful book I have read on this topic.

EXCELLENT guide! Lots of details. Written for the layman. "Professionals" at Generac insisted that I needed a 22 kW system that would cost over $10,000. After doing the calculations from this guide (including the load balancing test) I have a 8750 kW system running off natural gas that powers only what I need to run (including my 4 ton AC) for a total cost of $1200.

The Apex of Mountaineering Skill Books

I have been backpacking, hiking, and climbing since I was little, and I am amazed at how much I have learned from this book about subjects I thought I had already mastered. This is the perfect resource for those looking to go from climbing fourteeners on Class Two routes to fall and winter climbs, couloir ascents, vertical faces, and taller glaciated mountains.

To be honest, certain areas touched upon in this book are more thoroughly covered by other sources. The segment on avalanches is far from comprehensive, for instance, but the book admits very openly when further information is required, and points the reader in the right direction about where to learn more. However, certain users will not find this book very useful because of its focus on attaining summits. If you are looking for a book on hiking and backpacking, the first one hundred pages will be extremely valuable, but the remainder will be too summit-focused and too climbing-centric to be of much use. For those looking for info on skiing, this book has some interesting observations, but largely avoids the subject. To these people, I would recomend they look for more specialized books in their particular subjects until they gain an interest in bagging peaks.

For anybody whatsoever looking to start climbing summits above treeline, performing vertical climbs of any difficulty, reviewing old materials, or looking at improving skills or developing new ones for climbing, this book is absolutely required. No matter your skill level, this book will have useful information to reference, review, or expand upon. There are no other books whose breadth, clarity, and organization match this book's.

To put it poetically, for all aspiring mountaineers, this book is the Regolith upon which your skills should build. It should be the anchor upon which you hang. It will be a compass to those who know how to use it and appreciate its value, guiding you in the right direction. As the old saying goes, there are many paths to the summit, and this book will reveal all the ways to get there.

Fantastic reference for a beginner

I'm a newer climber who is also an aspiring trad climber and alpinist so while my opinion doesn't carry much weight, this book has been a fantastic reference for a beginner. I've read it cover to cover and then routinely re-read various chapters and sections. I take courses through professional guides but always pre-read/re-read applicable sections of this book before practicing skills with a guide. While this book does mention sport climbing, it is clearly focused on alpine-style mountaineering (trad rock climbing, ice climbing, snow/glacier travel, etc.) but many skills discussed are applicable to sport climbing.
