About the Author
CLEVELAND SALMON is an architect and maintains a private practice in Antioch, Tennessee. In private practice he specializes in affordable, energy-efficient design, with completed works in Jamaica, St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands), and North America. Mr. Salmon studied architecture at the University of Technology (formerly the College of Arts, Science, and Technology) in Kingston, Jamaica, and at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Another, much better, BooK:

COURTYARDS: Aesthetic, Social, and Thermal Delight; by John Reynolds, published November 2001.
Courtyards contains a huge amount of valuable information for building in hot humid and hot dry climates. Not only a "pretty picture book," Courtyards takes the reader through width to depth ratios; height and width proportions; comfort zone enhancement through thermal mass, ventilation, and shading; and much more. In fact, although Courtyards is similarly priced as the book above, I thought it contained 10 times as much valuable information - real information that I could put to immediate use for my projects in the Yucatan. Color and B&W photos and line drawings illustrate the many considerations for hot weather design, yet the book is not overly technical. Nor is it over-simplified, which is the main problem with Tropical Regions.
Tropical Regions remains the only book I've had to return to Amazon - even a year later - with dozens and dozens of books ordered.
GOOD books about tropical housing design are very hard to come by and I'd like to point searchers in the right direction. Since architecture books in general are usually so expensive, finding a useful selection is very important.
Also, I have to echo the writer below. Richard Hyde's book CLIMATE RESPONSIVE DESIGN...for Hot Humid Climates is also very helpful. I felt it was a little more technical and not as colorful as COURTYARDS. Either would be a good place to start your research for tropical housing construction.

Scanty Information, despite the Book Description's claims

I have to agree with Rainer Mebus. This book is going to be returned. It is not suited for architects or anyone with even basic concepts of building siting and construction. A hodge-podge of photographs, gathered from various places, do nothing to illustrate examples of the textual concepts. As far as being an "indispensible source," statements such as (p102) "A hat or cool shade is often useful when exposed to sun... as the sun can be very bright when the sky is clear and the sunlight is intense." or (p103) "Vegetation is luxuriant where rainfall is high." & (p105) "The effects of earthquakes are mainly economic, although poorly constructed buildings can result in loss of life." are hardly indispensible and belong more in an elementary school than a volume that claims to be "essential reading for architects and other building professionals."
Mebus is correct that all of the data here contained is readily found in other, better and cheaper books. I was hoping that the longer and first review was more correct, but was sadly disappointed that newer concepts, techniques and materials were not discussed in a book printed in 1999. Further, all the information contained can be found in basic architectural concepts courses or books and is only slightly tailored to fit the idea of "tropical construction." The author borrows diagrams and descriptions from many other texts.

Tropical Architecture in a Nut Shell

Cleveland Salmon has thought of everything! When dealing with tropical architecture, there is a lot to think about. Salmon energetically lists almost every possible condition found in the built tropics from desert dryness to humid jungle conditions. This book serves the tropical architect like a shopping list or as a reminder of what conditions must not be overlooked when planning to build in the tropics, wherever that may be.
My only negative comment would be that the chapters are way too brief. Nevertheless, this book is worth its weight in gold for all the topics and subtopics it includes. Once seeing this compendium as an overview, anyone can deepen an interest or concern with other sources. This book on tropical architecture, however, is where you want to start.

Honorable Company

I had ordered this book from MediaMall Retail, but it never made it to my doorstep. I was very disappointed as I couldn't wait to start making my tropical and exotic sugar flowers. When the Company learned that I did not receive it, they attempted to contact me several times to clear the matter up. I was having problems receiving their notifications, but eventually got them. After contacting them, they immediately resolved and refunded my loss, and gave me a "Goodwill" refund. This Company is honorable and I hope they'll do business with me in the future.

Surprise!

Although it started out as expected, a story about prostate cancer survival, then it turned into a philosophical diatribe that meandered like a driverless motorcycle and ended in a ditch-namely my garbage. I didn't expect to hear why religion is the problem and why we are in trouble as a world according to the author.

It takes one kind of courage to fight cancer for 30 years. It takes another entirely different kind of courage and wisdom to make love as important as survival for 30 years, not be distracted by the shadows of mortality or the indignities of treatment This book is inspiring on both levels.

Reading this book was a learning experience. I am grateful for the insight it has given me into fighting prostate cancer, the knowledge of some of the treatments available, and his diagnosis and decision making philosophy

Claims to Fame.

What is at stake in the contemporary society of spectacle is the struggle for controlling the impact of the "signs of the real" (p. 7) over the mass of consumers and their possible resistance. The question of authenticity and realness has been present since the early celebrity consumer culture. Once a text is recognized as public and drowned into the flow of the social circulation, its ambivalence of being readable either in logical or mythological ways shapes it with an `inconvenient' edge; but in contemporary culture this problem is framed by the omnipresence and awareness of a third agent: the machine (p. 34) which is un-detachable from the celebrity-text. The industrial machinery increasingly is drawn into the narrative it produces, making the industrial process less a vehicle for the product and more a part of it, in a similar way as brands do to the commodities they label.

The still broadly accepted assumption in media studies stating that emancipation from authoritarian media depends on "demystifying" processes, achieving awareness by unveiling the machinery of production is challenged by Gamson when he demonstrates that alienation (production/consumer) is not overcome with information because information is immediately reconverted in entertainment. This finding invites further analyses to understand why and how Celebrity-watching audiences "bracket" evidence for the sake of maintaining their consumption not as endings but as instrumental mediations for their everyday ritualizations.

Audiences simultaneously play voyeuristic and performing roles (p. 139) making the axis of the watcher and the watched a superficial layer (a pre-text) "serving" underlying and ongoing conversations (both private and public).
A commonality in all sorts of interpretive communities is their joyful engagement in the decoding and reading of texts. Hermeneutic pleasures attired with playful attitudes are fully consonant with other meaning-making experiences where media consumption is used as a pre-textual resource, even in practices deemed as "serious" as religious practices . As seen with the "game players", there is an ability of decreeing at will the realness of an event, in spite of being acknowledged its fictitiousness. This contempt to what is real or fictional makes the former an irrelevant factor, as long as the story is kept as a sufficient resource for maintaining the social conversation. Hence, belief is self-consciously perceived as a matter of choice based on how much a belief suits ones' needs, since the text itself has no particular authority (p. 179).

Skepticism (truth and reality as undeterminable) is not a belligerent statement but a strategy to keep the conversation ongoing. In doing so, the text's original intention of being consumed as reliable information is subverted and reconverted into an ironic tool of resistance. The original alienation (the gap between the production and the consumer) and the implicit one-way communication model are not overcome, but this condition starts playing in favor of the consumers. In other words: consuming texts and playing games of truth with them reverse the dominating and objectifying relationship that traditionally texts exert upon readers, instead it is the reader the one who subjects the text in a way that what really matters is that the text doesn't really matter (p. 184). A social cognition implication of this is that open-coded consumption evidence a degree of distrust of the public and institutional selves (institutions of truth and social hypostasis, as Peter Berger likes to refer).

We recently had a tragedy in my family and I lost both my sister and brother-in-law in a boating accident. My great-niece (their granddaughter) lived with them and I became very concerned with how she would handle these sudden deaths. I bought this book because of the reviews and I'm SO GLAD I did!! My great-niece looked at her mom the other day and told her that her invisible string is really long because it reaches MeMe and Paw all the way in heaven. Talk about tears, but such a relief that she knows they are watching her and love her. My fear was that she would think they just left.

I discovered this book, The Invisible String, when my toddler started having separation anxiety. This book is deeply meaningful and has been an invaluable tool in our home!

As a mother of two young children, I am always looking for books that have relatable characters, carry a strong message and show healthy ways to process feelings. The Invisible String does all of that and more. My three-year-old son loves reading about Liza and Jeremy. He asks me lots of questions about the twins and is curious about each page of the book. Additionally, the story lends itself to deeper conversations about love and interconnectedness. I feel so fortunate to have this book as an anchor for our conversations.

After reading this book, my son and I started wearing an “invisible string” on our wrists, which my son pulls on when he misses me. He has been wearing it for over a year now and it is such a comfort to him. I really recommend this book!

Good book for Professors and Students

I am a teacher of Introductory Mathematics for Economics. Traditionally, it is not very easy to find good introductory books of Mathematical Economics.

I consider this book to be one of the best. It covers the most important mathematical concepts and techniques such as functions, differentiation, partial differentiation, integration, differential equations, financial mathematics. In all the chapters the reader will find several progress exercises adequate to an introductory level.

The authors clearly show a great deal of concern with the economic applications. This is one of the best aspects of this book: for every mathematical technique explained, the authors present several economic applications.

If you are an undergraduate student of Economics or Business you will find this book extremely useful. If you are a Professor you will discover several interesting examples of mathematical applications to Economic analysis.

It has it's moments

We used this for a class last semester, and I was disappointed. The book is bound poorly, and was falling apart by the end of the semester. Also, I was missing several of the homework problems! There was a table of data for one question, but the questions were not printed in my book. I compared with another student, and his had them. I think 3 of us in the course of 17 had books with this problem. On another chapter, it went from section x.3 to x.5, but the answers for section x.4 matched up with section x.5 in the book. It was really confusing, and my teacher, a grad student, was very apologetic and wished we had used another book. It does have good information and is a good review of a broad range of mathematics, but sometimes I feel like it taught you a, b, and c, and then asked you in the problems for a&q in the same question, when it never covered q at all. It has a lot of potential, but a new corrected edition would be a good idea.
